Learn MoreTherapeutic recreation is a key component of all our care plans for residents and is why our community holds community life in high priority. Therapeutic recreation is a type of therapy that focuses on improving physical and mental health through active and enjoyable participation in recreation activities. Activities are tailored to meet different needs, so they may include things like crafts, gardening, cooking classes or games. A recent study found that therapeutic recreation has been shown to enhance both cognitive functioning and emotional well-being among older adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. A number of studies have also found significant improvement in moods for patients diagnosed with cancer after participation in recreational activities such as music therapy and art therapy. Therapeutic recreation has been shown to improve mood, reduce depression symptoms, increase self-esteem and confidence levels while increasing function for those living with disabilities. The goal of therapeutic recreation is to not only help individuals learn how to thrive and live with dignity in spite of limitations imposed by illness, injury or other chronic conditions, but to maintain physical and cognitive fitness as they age by promoting health through leisure activities. Our activity department leaders attend each resident’s routine care conferences along with community administration, social services, therapy and dietary to review progress and update care plans as our team works to return our family of residents to a higher level of strength, independence, and quality of life.
